ATM Safety Guidelines: Safeguarding Physical Cash Transactions

While digital payments are rapidly expanding, physical ATM access remains a primary touchpoint for millions of Namibians. The physical security of ATM nodes and card slot interfaces is crucial to preventing localized financial crimes.

1. Understanding ATM Skimming & Card Trapping

Skimming devices are thin card-slot overlays that capture magnetic stripe details, coupled with micro-cameras positioned to record keyboard keystrokes during PIN entry. Card trapping involves mechanical blockages that hold the physical card inside the ATM machine, allowing the criminal to retrieve the card once the customer exits.

2. Cardinal Safety Rules at the ATM

Always inspect the card slot and keyboard overlay for any loose or unfamiliar parts before inserting your card. Cover the keypad with your hand while typing your PIN, and never accept assistance from strangers standing near the terminal.

3. Collaborative Security via the Card Forum

The PAN Card Forum establishes standard security directives and interfaces across all domestic ATMs. By working alongside law enforcement, member banks continuously upgrade terminal software and hardware traps to isolate and prevent localized card crimes.
