Protecting Your Enterprise from Fraudulent Proof of Payment Scams

Fraudulent Proof of Payment (PoP) scams represent a significant operational risk for merchants and retailers in Namibia. Fraudsters manipulate digital PDF receipts to display successful transfers for goods they wish to collect immediately, leaving business owners with zero settlement backings.

1. How Fake Proof of Payments Work

Scammers customize existing transaction PDFs, altering date fields, transaction amounts, and company logos using basic design tools. They then present these altered documents as evidence of immediate transfer, urging the vendor to release goods before the bank clearing window is finalized.

2. Best Verification Practices

Never rely solely on PDF receipts or email notifications supplied directly by the client. Always verify your bank balances directly via secure internet banking interfaces, or leverage instant payment mechanisms that provide real-time settlement confirmation.

3. The Role of the EFT Forum

The PAN EFT Forum continuously refines operational guidelines and clearing speeds to ensure reliable notification flows, supporting merchants in validating funds settlement quickly and securely.
